Good Friday

I gave the scooter a break and rode my bike to work on Friday. John rode with me and along the way we stopped at My Favorite Muffin in downtown Reno for coffee and pastries. Then I was off to work for a little bit before leaving for the final walk through of the house.

Since all the repairs were made to our satisfaction, we signed off and the keys were ours! We didn't waste any time moving in since our truck was already loaded.

Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous, as it probably was everywhere. One of the things we love about Reno is the surrounding mountains which you can see nearly every place you go.

Then we met my co-worker and his wife during Happy Hour at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants that specializes in seafood. 2 for 1 margaritas or Coronas, bottomless chips, salsas, and bean dip, free appetizers (they usually serve shell-on shrimp but last night they served the tastiest mussels). I ordered the fried whole Talapia - it was delicious!! We will miss the area in which we currently live but we are excited to begin a new chapter in our lives in our new home and getting to learn a different area of town.

It's beginning to look a lot like Spring time!

I got a new camera for my birthday so I thought I would take some test shots of the birds outside our window on our neighbor's tree. It comes with the standard 18-55mm lens and also the 70-300mm lens so I can capture subjects from a little farther away than the 55mm-200mm lens I had. My old trusty camera (the Nikon D60)the lenses, and everything I have acquired to use with it sold on eBay. I was so sad to see it go, I actually cried. I've never been so attached to my electronics, LOL.

I think it's time I learn to use the manual settings of the camera (it's a Nikon 5200) so I can focus beyond the branches and leaves in the foreground.  I got it from Costco and it's not too late to get one for yourself and take advantage of the manufacture's rebate which expires at the end of this month.

Girl Interrupted

We are packing this weekend and will be moving next weekend in to our new home. It is a two-story new construction outside of Reno, NV.  There are a few things left for the construction team to finish including the fence and shutters (and blown-in insulation in the attic--oops!) but besides that, it is pretty much move in ready.  I thought this day would take forever to arrive but the timing could not have been more perfect.  Life is always full of happy interruptions - right?!?

These are the photos from concept to (near completion).  I'll keep you posted after we're moved in.  Wish us luck on our move!!

Indy: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Late this week I came back from Alliance 2013, an annual user-driven conference of Oracle application users from all over the world who gathered in Indianapolis, IN this year. There were educational sessions/workshops presented by users, Oracle strategists and developers, and vendors with information about their products.

I was in Indy from last Saturday until late Wednesday. I have to admit that it is nice to stay home this weekend for once and not have to be out of town again this weekend.  I miss my time with John and our cats Havi and Elgy (she is sitting on my lap as I am typing this).  I wanted to tell you about my trip when I decided to start this post...but all I really have to say is that it was a nice trip, I learned a lot, and it was great spending time with colleagues I haven't seen in a while as well as the ones I work with on a day-to-day basis.  The midwest is a different place, nice to visit, but I am glad to be back home. You know what they say about no place like home--wherever 'home' may be.

Weekend at Madera Stage Race

This past weekend we were in Madera, CA for a stage race.  While the races and our weekend went well overall, I have to admit it was also a weekend of dining disappointments.  I had this long rant of a post but then thought better.  No one enjoys reading about complaints and so I will stick to sharing the positive side of our weekend.

We went to dinner with John's teammates on Friday and our weekend started out on a high note.  In their presence, everything else is pale by comparison because they are all a joy to be with.  It was one of John's teammates birthday so it ended up being a long but really nice evening.
MADERA CRITERIUM
John had two races on Saturday, the criterium in which he placed 7th.  This season, he is racing in a more competitive category (men in age 35+ or older in Category 1, 2, and 3) so his placing is pretty good.

SHARON TIME TRIAL
The time trial was in the afternoon and afterwards John was visibly not happy with his individual results. Winter in Reno has forced him to train indoors and that can never truly prepare anyone nor replace the conditions for racing on the road.  Still, he came in 16th out of the 33 guys on the roster.

Saturday evening was filled with a chain of more dining disappointments but I promised I wouldn't speak of it.  We finally settled on the hotel bed with our feet up with a glass of wine with our take-out dinner.

DAULTON ROAD RACE
John wasn't thrilled about continuing with the road race on Sunday based on his performance from the time trial. But his sweet Mom talked some sense into him and I convinced him that no matter the results of this last event, he will feel better to have the race training outdoors he so needed.  And so he stuck it out and finished 9th without getting a mechanical or disabling leg cramps.

As always, I enjoy being a spectator and taking photos.  This time, we brought my bike along which made it easy to get to the start line, feed zone, and finish line of the road race.  These points were a mile to over 6+ miles apart and you are limited to where you can park a vehicle so if you are going to watch the road rice, it would be a good idea to bring a bicycle to get you around if you can.

On our way home, we stopped in Auburn to visit the home of our friends who moved out from Las Vegas last July.  We visited with them and their son who is now two-years old and their oh-so friendly dog.  Our weekend ended just as it had began.  In the company of friends who reminded us of the good things in life and for THAT we are so grateful.
