From Golf Cart to Bike Ride

Today I helped load 303 boxes (each containing 12 catalogs that are 2" thick per piece) onto dollies and delivered them to the various buildings across campus. Luckily my co-worker and I had the use of a couple golf carts and two outsourced laborers to help us. We worked from 8:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m., squatting, lifting, loading and unloading the carts and dollies!! I wish I had worn my pedometer just to count the number of steps I took which must have been over a 10,000 steps. I had a lot of fun while getting in a good workout!! It was a nice change from what would otherwise have been a sedentary day at my desk and a quick workout during lunch hour.

When I got home, I gathered up the guts to go on a short bike ride with my husband, John, who has been cycling for several months now. We rode around our neighborhood to check out a row of million dollar homes in construction and then continued down the street before heading back home on a quiet bike trail. The short four mile loop took us a total of 25 minutes--mainly because of me. I struggled to keep up with John while riding looked so easy for him--his cardio is phenomenal.

I think I can train at the gym using the stationary bikes available so the next time we ride, I'll do a better job of keeping up with my husband. I have been feeling ... bored with my workout routine on the stairmaster, stairstepper, and elliptical trainer so I think cycling could be the next adventure for me. The sport is an excellent way to get in shape. A 140-lb. person can burn over 1,000 calories per hour riding at speeds of over 20 m.p.h.* (we averaged 15 m.p.h.). It could be another hobby during which my husband and I can spend some time together.
