Bloody Beer

While browsing the beer/liquor aisle at my local supermarket, I stumbled upon a Bud Light with Clamato (and salt and lime) called the Chelada and purchased a couple to try at home. Warning: if you don't like Bloody Mary's or tomato juice, you're not gonna like this so you can skip this post.

At first the flavor of the Chelada took a bit to get use to. For those of you who are not a big fan of beer, the taste of the hops is very mild. I would sum up the drink as a watered down Bloody Mary (except the beer is the diluter). The drink is light, has a little spicy kick, it's refreshing and convenient to take along when boating (most parks do not allow glass bottles and taking your own drink mixers can be a pain).

Now my husband and I are big fans of the Chelada. When we're at home, we like to make it from scratch. Here is my recipe:

  • 8 oz lightbeer
  • 4 oz Clamato juice
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • ground black pepper
Pour in a salt rimmed glass and enjoy (I mix kosher salt, Lawry's salt, and freshly ground black pepper for my salt rimmer)! Garnish with a squeezed lime.

You can also substitute spicy V8 juice and clam juice for the Clamato juice.

Let me know what you think but I give three cheers for the Chelada!
