Phone Call from Half Way Around the World

Last night, I received a voice mail from my cousin in Laos, Tan. It was difficult to understand her. Her Laotian is different from the language (I thought) I knew. It was strange in a neat way to hear her talk...her voice coming from the other side of the world.

I've never met Tan. Prior to this year, I have only seen a photo of her as a little girl, sitting in a bowl her parents were holding. She's grown up now, late teens I think--and she has a little brother whom she calls "Bear".

I think if I were to visit Laos, I would have difficulty communicating with my broken Laotian--what little I now know. I would be a foreigner in the very country where I was born and left 22 years ago. How ironic. Posted by Hello
